Intake & Surrender Information
When keeping birds is no longer possible
We understand that situations change. Birds may outlive their flock, housing rules may shift, or life circumstances may make continued care difficult. Reaching out for help doesn’t mean you’ve failed — it means you’re trying to make a responsible decision.
This page explains when our rescue may be a good fit, how the intake process works, and what to expect.
What We Do
We are a permanent farm fowl sanctuary, not a rehoming or resale program.
Birds accepted into our care are brought in with the understanding that they will remain here long-term. Our focus is on flock stability, low stress, and realistic, lifelong care.
Birds We May Be Able to Accept
We primarily accept:
-
Chickens
-
Ducks
-
Geese
-
Quail
-
Guinea
-
Peacock
-
Emu
-
Pheasant
Turkey
Common intake situations include:
-
Birds who are the last of their flock
-
Older hens nearing or in retirement
-
Extra roosters not allowed by local ordinances
-
Birds whose owners no longer have the time, space, or proper setup
-
Birds displaced by changes in housing or life circumstances
Each request is reviewed individually, and acceptance depends on space, current flock dynamics, and biosecurity considerations.
Birds We Are Not Able to Accept
To protect the health of the flock and the sustainability of the rescue, there are situations we are unable to take on.
We generally cannot accept:
-
Birds requiring emergency medical intervention
-
Wildlife or native waterfowl
-
Birds with highly contagious or unmanaged disease
If we are not the right fit, we will do our best to point you toward appropriate resources.
The Intake Process
If you believe the rescue may be a good fit, please contact us with the following information:
-
Species and number of birds
-
Age (if known)
-
Reason for surrender
-
Current housing and flock situation
-
Any known health concerns
This information helps us assess compatibility and protects the birds already in our care.
Please understand that intake is not immediate and is dependent on available space and timing.
Biosecurity Matters
The health of our existing flocks is a top priority.
For that reason:
-
Intake is by approval only
-
Quarantine procedures may apply
-
We may request a waiting period before acceptance
-
Drop-offs are scheduled, not unscheduled
These measures are not personal — they are necessary for responsible long-term care.
A Note About Emergencies
If you have found an injured bird, or believe there is an immediate safety concern, please contact your local animal control or appropriate authorities first. They are equipped to respond quickly and safely in urgent situations.
Respectful Expectations
We do not place blame or judgment on people seeking help. At the same time, we ask for patience and honesty throughout the intake process.
Our responsibility is to the birds already here as well as those who may arrive in the future. Saying “not right now” is sometimes part of doing this work responsibly.
